Easy Homemade Tortillas

Have you ever started making tacos for dinner just to discover those bland, tasteless, store bought tortillas that you have in the pantry are old and stale?  Well, this recipe is so easy and I’d be willing to bet that you have all the ingredients in your pantry.  These tortillas are easy to make, totally worth it, and are warm, puffy, and full of flavor!  (Oh, and they are free of lard, which most restaurants use in their tortillas.)  Then load them up with all of your favorite taco fixins!

Mexican Tacos with Homemade Tortillas

All you need is some flour, salt, baking powder, canola oil, and water.  Mix the dry ingredients together, then add the canola oil and mix with your hands until the mixture resembles a fine crumb.

Add the hot water and knead it a little until a ball of dough forms.

Cover and let it sit for about 30 minutes.  Then divide it into 12 dough balls.

Using a roller, roll them out onto a floured surface.  Each tortilla will be about 8 inches in diameter.  Don’t worry if they look imperfect…the beauty of homemade tortillas are that they are perfectly imperfect!  I cook them on a heated griddle (on high heat) for about 1-2 minutes per side.  They will puff up a little and have little brown spots, then flip over and cook other side.  Wrap them in a clean dish towel to keep them warm while the others are cooking.

Easy Homemade Tortillas

Ingredients

3 cups Organic, Unbleached Flour
1 teaspoon Salt
½ teaspoons Baking Powder
⅓ cups Canola Oil
1 cup Hot Water

Directions

Mix the flour, salt, and baking powder with a whisk.  Add the canola oil and mix with your fingers until all the oil is incorporated and the mixture looks like fine crumbs.  Add 1 cup of hot water and mix until a ball is formed. Cover with plastic wrap and let the dough rest for about 30 minutes.

Divide the dough into 12 balls and roll out one at a time on a floured surface.  Cook on a hot, ungreased griddle over medium-high heat. Turn the tortilla when brown blisters form on the first side. Serve warm.
